The Bar-Room Billboard
History of the WWII Bar Sign

The Bar-Room Billboard is a vintage bar room chart put together by my dad while stationed in Hawaii with the Marine Corps. He was a veteran of both WW2 and the Korean War. He used to say, “Why did I go in the second time?” Dick was part of a squad that was nicknamed “the alcohol squad” while stationed in Hawaii as well as California and on a frigate. During his time in the Marine Corps he was also called in to protect San Francisco from the up-rising at Alcatraz Penitentiary. He and his friends enjoyed having a few highballs—sometimes more than they should. One time my dad said they were a little late getting back to base camp and his sergeant had him put a bucket over his head and yell, “I’m a sh-- bird!” for twenty-four hours.

After his time spent in the service, my father married his college sweetheart Marilyn, the farmer’s daughter. Dick was his name and he seldom went by Richard unless he was doing business. During his life he loved poker and put together a poker club that met for 35 years. He had his billboard hanging on the wall. It was originally done in pencil. He and his friends met once a month and did the man thing by smoking cigars, telling jokes, drinking and eating well into the night while us kids were not allowed to hang in the sacred place!

Our father had jobs all his life other than farming with his father in-law during the winter break and his last was his real estate firm. Dick was a great father to two boys, husband, grandfather, and a mentor to many! He was a very proud Marine and showed it by having the Marine Corps band over to our home.

Enjoy and have a highball for our father, Dick!
